Play Lightning Tap Online Free — Solo or With Friends

One big button, one ticking clock and as many taps as your thumbs can manage. Simple, loud and surprisingly competitive.

Choose how to play

How to Play

  1. Choose how long the challenge lasts: 5, 10 or 30 seconds. Ten seconds is the classic.
  2. Press Start. A three-two-one countdown appears, and the clock begins the moment the big purple button shows up.
  3. Tap the button as many times as you can. Every tap counts, so two thumbs are allowed and encouraged.
  4. When the timer bar runs out, your total appears along with your speed in taps a second.
  5. Press Play again to beat your best. Your top score for each length is saved on your device.

On a computer you can press Space or Enter instead of clicking. Holding a key down does not count — every tap has to be a fresh press.

Rules

Your score is the number of taps you make before the time runs out. Higher is better. A run counts as a strong one when you average six taps a second or more: 60 taps in ten seconds, 30 in five, or 180 in thirty. When two or more people play, the highest total wins, and an exact tie is a draw. Taps made while the rules drawer is open do not count, and the clock stops while it is open.

Tips & Strategy

  • Use two thumbs. Alternating left and right thumbs is much faster than hammering with one finger.
  • Stay light. Short, quick touches beat heavy presses. Let your thumbs bounce off the screen.
  • Keep the phone steady. Rest it on a table or hold it firmly in both hands so the screen doesn't wobble.
  • Pace the long run. In the 30-second version, most people slow down after fifteen seconds. Start a little below your top speed and finish strong.
  • Warm up. Shake out your hands before a serious attempt. A relaxed grip is a fast grip.

Game Modes

Solo is a straight score attack: beat your own record for each length. With a friend on one phone splits the screen in two, with the top half turned round so you can sit facing each other. Both of you tap your own half at the same time, and the bigger total wins. On a laptop, the bottom player presses A and the top player presses L. With three to eight players on one phone, everyone takes a turn in order, and the scoreboard fills in as each person finishes. Pass the phone along when the screen says so.

Play with Friends Online

Choose Play Online, create a room and share the link or code in your group chat. When everyone has joined, the host presses Start and all phones count down together. Each player taps on their own screen, and live progress bars show how the others are doing. Final scores appear as each run ends. If someone's connection drops, the host's phone closes the race after the time is up, so nobody is left waiting. There is no chat or typing in rooms, just taps and emoji reactions.

Lightning Tap FAQ

What is a good score in 10 seconds?

Most people manage between 50 and 70 taps. Reaching 80 or more takes practice and two quick thumbs.

Does tapping with several fingers count?

Yes. Every separate touch on the button counts as one tap, so two thumbs work best.

Why didn't my long press count more than once?

A tap is one touch going down. Holding your finger on the screen, or holding a key, only counts once.

Is my best score saved?

Your best score for each length is stored in your browser on this device. Clearing the browser data removes it.

Can I play against the computer?

No. Lightning Tap is about your own speed, so play solo to beat your record, or challenge real people on one phone or online.
