How to Play

  1. Choose a mode and the number of players. Empty seats can be filled by the computer.
  2. On your turn, tap Roll. You need a 6 to bring a token out of your base onto your coloured start square.
  3. After rolling, tap one of your glowing tokens to move it forward by the number shown. If only one move is possible, it happens by itself.
  4. Travel once around the board clockwise, then turn into your own coloured home column.
  5. Land exactly on the centre to bring a token home. The first player with all four tokens home wins.

Rules

Each player owns four tokens that start in the base of their colour. Red, green, yellow and blue sit in the four corners, and in a two-player game the two players take opposite corners so the race is fair.

A roll of 6 lets you bring a token out, and it also gives you another roll. Be careful, though: if you roll three 6s in a row, your turn ends at once and nothing more happens. If a roll gives you no legal move, the turn passes to the next player (a 6 with no move still lets you roll again).

If your token lands on a square holding an opponent's token, that token is captured and goes straight back to its base. Captures do not happen on the eight safe squares, which are marked with a star: the four coloured start squares and the four star squares in the middle of each arm.

Your home column belongs to you alone, so nobody can touch a token once it turns in. To finish, you need the exact number to reach the centre. Capturing a token or bringing one home earns you a bonus roll.

Tips & Strategy

  • Count the danger zone. An opponent can only hit you from one to six squares behind. Before moving, check which of your tokens has a rival within six steps and move that one to safety first.
  • Use the stars as rest stops. A token parked on a star square cannot be captured, so it is a great place to wait while you move other tokens.
  • Do not rush one token alone. Having two or three tokens on the board gives you a choice on every roll, which makes a bad number far less painful.
  • Chase when you are behind. A capture sends a rival token all the way back and gives you another roll, so it is often worth more than a few squares of progress.
  • Enter the home column early. Once a token turns into your column it is completely safe, so spend small rolls pushing tokens into it rather than leaving them exposed near the end.

Game Modes

Play vs Computer puts you against one to three computer players. Easy makes loose, random choices, Medium follows sensible habits, and Hard always looks for captures, safe squares and threats before it moves.

Play with Friend is pass-and-play for two to four people on one phone or tablet. Toggle any seat to the computer if you are short of players.

Play Online lets friends in different homes share one board, with the dice rolled by the host's game so every screen stays in step.

Play with Friends Online

Pick Play Online and create a room to get a short code and a shareable link. Send it in your family group or class chat, and each person who opens it joins your lobby with their own name. When at least two players are in, the host presses Start. Seats that stay empty can be taken by the computer if you tick the option. Every roll and move shows up on all screens, and quick emoji reactions let you cheer a lucky six without typing.

Ludo FAQ

How many players can play?

Two, three or four. With two players you get opposite colours, red and yellow, which keeps the race even.

Why can't I move after rolling?

Either all your tokens are still in base and you did not roll a 6, or your only tokens are near home and the roll is too big. The turn then passes on automatically.

Is the dice fair?

Yes. Every roll comes from a random seed that no player can change, and online games use the host's copy so nobody gets a different number.

Which squares are safe?

The four coloured start squares and the four grey star squares. A token standing on any of them cannot be captured.

Can I play without an account?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no download.
