How to Play

  1. Put your finger anywhere on the playfield and slide it left or right. The paddle follows your finger along the bottom.
  2. Lift your finger (or press Space) to launch the ball from the paddle.
  3. Keep the ball in play by moving the paddle underneath it every time it comes down.
  4. Break every brick on the screen to move on to the next level. There are 20 levels in one run.
  5. Catch the falling capsules with your paddle to collect power-ups.
  6. You start with three balls. When the last one drops past the paddle, the run is over.

Rules

Each plain brick breaks in one hit and gives 10 points. Darker bricks are tougher: they show small white dots for the hits they still need, and they crack as you wear them down. A brick that needs three hits is worth 30 points when it finally breaks, and every partial hit adds 5.

The ball bounces off the side walls, the ceiling and the paddle. Where it lands on the paddle decides its new direction: the middle sends it almost straight up, and the ends send it off at a steep slant. The ball also speeds up slightly with every rally, and later levels start faster.

Clearing a level earns a bonus that grows with the level number. If the ball rests on the paddle for a few seconds after a lost life, it launches by itself so the game keeps moving.

Tips & Strategy

  • Aim with the edges of the paddle. Hitting with the left or right end is the only way to change the ball’s angle, so move early and meet the ball off-centre on purpose.
  • Dig a tunnel to the top. Clear one narrow column through the wall. Once the ball slips above the bricks, it rattles around up there and breaks many bricks while you rest.
  • Take tough bricks from the side. Shielded rows at the bottom of later walls soak up hits. Aim at the gaps beside them rather than attacking them head-on.
  • Do not chase every capsule. A power-up is never worth losing the ball. If a capsule and the ball fall on opposite sides, stay with the ball.
  • Save the slow capsule for busy moments. The slow effect lasts about nine seconds and helps most when several balls are in play or the speed has built up.
  • Lift to launch only when ready. The ball waits on the paddle, so slide into a good spot first, then release for a clean first shot.

Game Modes

Brick Breaker is a single-player game. One run takes you through all 20 levels in order, from an easy solid wall to patterns such as a pyramid, a diamond, twin towers, chevrons and a smiling face. After level ten the shapes return upside down, with more rows and many more tough bricks.

The four power-ups are WIDE (a longer paddle for twelve seconds), ×3 (two extra balls), SLOW (a calmer ball for a short while) and ♥ (an extra ball in reserve, up to five).

Play with Friends

This game has no split-screen mode, but it is perfect for taking turns on one phone. Agree on a rule, such as “highest score after two levels”, pass the phone between turns and write the scores down. Your personal best stays saved on the device, so each friend can also try to top the record left behind by the others.

Brick Breaker FAQ

How do I control the paddle on a phone?

Drag anywhere on the playfield, not only on the paddle, so your thumb never hides the ball. On a keyboard, use the left and right arrow keys and press Space to launch.

What do the dots on some bricks mean?

They show how many more hits that brick needs. A brick with three dots must be hit three times before it breaks.

Why did the ball start moving on its own?

After you lose a ball, the new one waits on your paddle for about four seconds and then launches automatically. Tap or lift your finger sooner if you are ready.

Do power-ups carry over to the next level?

No. Each new level starts fresh with a normal paddle and a single ball, although any extra lives you caught are kept.

What happens when I clear all 20 levels?

You win the run and the final score is saved as your best if it beats your old record. Try again to finish with more lives and a bigger bonus.
